Cheers and Tears

Between Sixteen and the additions of Momo and Tzuyu, JYP had created something phenomenal. The nine girls each brought something different to the group and their talents had blossomed over the three years since debut. Their public appearances, even when they were on their way through airports, were greeted by mobs of screaming fans and even fancams of their performances (still notable for the massive fanboy presence) sometimes received millions of views on YouTube.

They were also delightful to watch when off stage – on V LIVE, in behind-the-scenes videos and variety shows they came across as cute, entertaining and completely at ease in each other’s company. They never denied that occasional conflicts arose within the group but they insisted that they were always resolved amicably. Nayeon once said that any disputes between members were over within a minute and the others agreed that it was easy to do so because they all talked so much! Their cheerfulness and lack of ego transmitted not only to teenage and twentysomething fans who felt in need of some joy in their lives, but also to millions who recognised that these girls were just like them.

‘The Best Thing I Ever Did’, Twice’s 2018 Christmas single, was a sweet, piano-based love song celebrating a relationship, but many took it as an expression of the way the members felt about being part of the group – especially with a video in which they watched clips of themselves from the past year. That made the final ‘Let us never change’ line extra poignant. It was added to the Yes or Yes tracks (along with a Korean version of ‘Be as One’) for a festive repackage called The Year of Yes, which made number two in the Christmas-week charts.

Twice’s schedule relaxed a little in the early months of 2019, but there was still plenty for Once to enjoy. JYP released Japanese digital versions of ‘Likey’ and ‘What is Love?’ (with music videos edited from the originals which meant Once could play ‘spot the difference’), there was a new series of Twice TV and the girls attended the Seoul Music Awards, although they were beaten to the daesang by BTS. Dahyun, Chaeyoung and Tzuyu took a silver medal for archery at the Idol Games, and Chaeyoung and Tzuyu wore their official school uniforms for the last time as they graduated from high school.

JYP Entertainment had been busy, though. In early February it debuted a five-piece girl group called Itzy – the company’s first girl group since Twice. Along with the rest of the JYP family, the Twice members celebrated the launch, with Tzuyu commenting that they finally had a ‘sister act to cheer for’. The Twice girls knew the Itzy girls as JYP trainees who had come to watch them practise and Chaeryeong from the new ensemble had even been in Sixteen with them all for a brief period. Twice were now seniors, looked up to and admired just as they had looked up to and admired
